Arch Rock Interpretive Trail

This 0.35 mile loop hike (1) explores the fascinating geologic processes that have shaped the park over millions of years. Since Joshua Tree isn't know for its sweeping arches, you'll be surprised to find such a beautiful feature tucked away here (4). This is a nice hike to add to a driving tour itinerary. It's short, but it packs a lot of interesting information along the way. The trail is easy to follow (2) and an optional cross country spur trail to Grand Tank can elongate the hike. (3)

White Tank and Grand Tank are both examples of old reservoirs created by cowboys back in the late 1800's. Small cement dams were added to natural rock dams to create seasonal water catchment during rainstorms. Many tanks, most notably Barker Dam, are still used to this day by the wildlife found in the park. (5) (6)

There is designated day-use parking located across the road from the trailhead. Please try to leave the campsites open for those who are looking to spend the night.

More Information

White Tank Campground

White Tank is a small 15-site campground located along Pinto Basin Road. If you are interested in a quiet and more secluded campground that also offers hiking, then this is your spot. White Tank is the last campground before Pinto Basin Road dives down into the Colorado Desert. These sites are suitable for tent camping and smaller trailers. Pit toilets, garbage, and recycling bins are the only amenities you'll find here, so make sure to pack in all the water you need.

Each campsite is equipped with a nice concrete picnic table, fire ring, and grill. The site are well spaced between White Tank monzogranite boulders, which offers a nice bit of solitude. Avoid sites #13 - #15 unless you enjoy people watching -- these sites butt up against Arch Rock Interpretive Trail which receives a good amount of traffic. Instead, try sites #3, #4, or #10 for a private little camping nook.

Arch Rock interpretive trail and Grand Tank trail provide a few short hiking options, but this campground is mostly about relaxing in a low-key desert environment.

Sites cost $10 per night and are all first-come, first-served. Self-register at the kiosk near the bathrooms.
